Default Egr

I passed my smog test yesterday, just barely. It looks like the issue is with the EGR system. What can be rebuilt? Can you rebuild the EGR valve? I need to trace the system to see what else is involved. What tests can I do to make sure things are working?

It has been a long time since I worked on an EGR system since the technology today has shifted to VVT as a way to retain some exhaust gas in the cylinders.

I would change the EGR valve since most of the time they stick from age.

So far the only one I have found, at Rock Auto, was around $450.00.

as I recall, access to the EGR serving is best done when you do the PCV since you will be removing the intake and related hoses. As to the "just barely" passing emissions, that should give you a clue as to what should be looked at. Too high on the Nxs? suggest you look for intake air leaks, clean the throttle body, idle air valve etc. Too high on the HCs? ignition tune up, clean the MAF, check the O2 sensor... If you suspect the EGR, check if you have a clogged PCV as well.

All good advice. I have 2 years before I have to do this again so I can pick one thing at a time and work on it. I don't put a lot of miles on the car and I like it so it is worth my time to fix stuff.
