Default engine problem

ok so ive had this car for a bout 2 years now. its a 94 volvo 850 turbo wagon. now, one random day i was on my way to work and my gas light was on and i had a backfire from the motor. now, i pulled over at a gas station put gas in and then went on my way. upon pulling out of station the car would not accelerate, it sputtered and shot alot of black smoke out exhaust. i pulled over, and it died. i can get it to start but it idles rough, runs like crap and the second i put it in gear it would die. i towed it home, and heres what ive done. i have replaced my mass air flow sensor. my plugs and wires. fuel pump relay, my cat on the exhaust. i even added some fuel injecotr cleaner thinking maybe it sucked some crap up. i replaced the fuel filter as well. still no luck. it idles smoother and will run and drive, but still really crappy acceleration and it has a hard time shifting gears, i have only driven it in my neighborhood as well since the innceident. i know my fuel pump is fine couse it hums like a brand new opne, i bought one and hooked it up it sounded the same. so please someone help me with this, what could my problem be. now after all the work and parts ive done it vcomes down to this. i start, it idles fine, almost better then before, i put in gear it sounds fine still, but once i go to accelerate it just feels like no power, almost like i have a 50cc dirtbike motor in there nmoving this car. so please help

Well the crank sensor(speed) sensor is between the tranny and engine and reads the flywheel.
You might have codes there. If you can read them I would. Are you sure your light is not burn't out?

Me I would look other places first. The black smoke is a sign to me that something is making it run to rich.
Have you checked all the intercooler hoses good for cracks or holes? Make sure one did not blow off.
If you have OBDII see if you can get your hands on a scanner that can read real time. The read the O2 sensor and ECT temps.

94's only have OBD under the pass side hood in the front. Not every problem will triger a light but can still set a code. You said the CEL was on but now off? Who cleared it, they do not clear by themselves?

Wow, I stand corrected, thanks! It's just that I have never come accross anything that indicated that. Always something new to learn...

ok i bought a chiltons manual. nowhere does it say rpm or speed sensor. heres my latest update. with transmission in "park", i can rev the engine up and hit the governor or whatever. with it in drive it will not go over 2000 rpm, in forward or reverse. if i put it in neutral, i can rev it jsut fine. any thoughts to whats going on.

Hay, how about the codes? I don't see that you pulled any or at least confirmed there were no codes, either OBD or OBDII which ever one you have? Are there any codes? Just wondering....

Default possible answer

distributor cap crack could have built up moisture so the sparks cross fire
it has happened to me from rinsing the engine off or hitting a good size puddle.
