Default exhaust mods and replacement

Can I straight pipe my Volvo? Cat delete and maybe 2.5 to 3 inch stainless? Or will there be backpressure issues? I just want to punctuate that deep Volvo vroom and I wouldn't mind it being kinda obnoxious loud (young kid living in the woods) thabks for everyones time

Can you, sure it's your car. Performance considerations, you likely wouldn't notice any loss or gain if it's the only thing you're doing. Just more noise.

I don't think I would mind more noise as long as it didn't sound unhealthy. I do want it loud. Loud and slow. And soon.. LOW!

Viva Performance has a Stainless Steel Exhaust that I plan to get soon. The N/A Exahust and a Straight down pipe are both available here- Exhaust and Downpipe Systems

That's $549 from Viva plus shipping . You might want to check out a local muffler shop to see what kind of price they can do a SS system for you.

I'd also check out OBX. A lot of us (I do) have their system and no complaints. Just not sure if they do a NA downpipe but if so, it could be $100 less than Viva. Seems I got mine around 400.

If that's from OBX racing website, I looked and the only 850 Exhaust part I see on their site is a header. I don't see an SS 850 N/A exhaust there. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Product Name - OBX Racing Sports

When I started searching for a Stainless Steel bolt on exhaust for my 850 GLT, I only found Viva Performance and Eurosport Tuning. Both are over $500. If there is indeed a less expensive SS exhaust for the 850, I'd definitely buy it. As for local shops in my area, they only do aluminized and I don't want aluminized. I want SS and I'm willing to pay $500 for it if I can't get it for less, but that's just me.

I've never searched for a NA exhaust. It may be they don't make one. If you had a shop that would make the down pipe you could buy the OBX system and sell off the two turbo downpipes.

I wasn't awake when I suggested that "R" manifold as it's turbo only.

Oh, ok. I was about to get excited about the possibility of saving $100 on an SS N/A exhaust for my 850GLT. Reckon I'll be getting the Viva then. Carry on. ;-)

I am going to be frank with you. Dont do this, it is a waste of your money. If you are just looking for sound, replace the suitcase muffler or completely bypass it. That will get you sound. You will not benefit or gain any performance by replacing the factory header for a performance header (which happens to be the exact same thing as OEM but shinny). If your after performance then save all your money, sell that car and buy a turbo.

Seriously dude? That's more than the car's worth..! And for what? Maybe 5-10 hp if that?

Don't want to curb your enthusiasm but jeeeez...

I used to have an N/A; do the airbox mod and call it a day..

Go ahead and do suspension mods (better struts/shocks and ipd sways) if you enjoy spirited driving. Then you can transfer them to your turbo car (when you eventually get one..).

You are right. I was wrong. $549 for an exhaust that the ECU isn't going to like is a bad idea. The exhaust needs back pressure. The Viva Exhaust takes it away and will cause the car to throw a code. A replacement stock exhaust with a nice tip is much cheaper and won't screw up how well the car runs. Thanks for the input.

Nobody is going to condone you for keeping the car. When we hear of people trying to get performance out of a N/A we try to warn them that bang for your buck its not worth it. If you understand that the base your dealing with has its limitations then we are all good. We have owned these Volvos for years and see many people get their first 850 N/A and are excited and ready to mod away. Your speaking to experienced Volvo owners who are just watching out for you. As long as you understand then we have done our job and will support you in whatever you decide to do with your 850. We will even help you mod it.

One of my 850's is an N/A. I just dont do anything to it other than maintenance. She runs great and if very reliable.

I read elsewhere on this forum that N/A Volvos need back pressure in the exhaust system, so the Viva SS exhaust that contains no baffles and has a straight through resonator, is actually a bad design that will cause the car to throw a code and run like crap. For $549, that's not a good idea. A Turbo swap would be more expensive than buying a used T5R or other Turbo Volvo and investing in an IPD stage 2 kit. So I'm seeing that appearance mods and worn out part replacement are pretty much all that can really be done on an N/A Volvo. I can now see why all of you guys do your best to squash questions about N/A Volvo mods. I'll be sticking to worn out part replacement questions and ideas on this car. If I find an AWD Turbo Volvo in good shape for sale, I'll ask about it here. Let me say it loud and clear so everyone hears me.

YOU WERE RIGHT. I WAS WRONG. And rather than suggest otherwise, I'll join you in saying the same thing if anyone asks about performance mods for an N/A Volvo. "Sell it and buy a Turbo Volvo". Preferably, AWD (just my personal preference. AWD would be handy in an ice storm, here in Atlanta.)

Thanks.
