Default Flash tuner for 850

Is the reason we can not get a flash tuner instead of sending the ECU off to be remapped is because it is not OBD II compliant?

The OBD port would be so much more useful if you wanted to do your own tuning!!

No. it's because in the older cars they use hard written eeproms.
These are written by dedicated eeprom burners controlled via a pc and associated software.

I had a car once that could be flash tuned, late model (2006) mazda.
It has a software problem. They couldn't fix it. Even after two years they couldn't fix it.
Will never own another mazda/ford based product again.

Do it right or go home..

I had a '93 854 donor car for my manual swap that did not have an OBD II port. It was in '96 (IIRC) that OBD II mandate came into effect.

I'd just send your ECM to iPd, have them update with the tune, and there you are. It's totally worth it!

I would do what I did and search the forums for someone selling a tuned ECU. Not only will you get the same tune for half the price most of the time, but you will not have any downtime waiting for the tuned ECU to be mailed back to you.

Well I thought about that but I thought it was hard coded to the car or something along those line's. They are always asking for the numbers off the engine or something.

In The new cars the ECU's are VIN locked to the car.
With the 850's you can swap ECU's as long as it has the same number's on it. I don't remember the details but there have been ECU's up for sale on VS as of late.
