Default Found another 850-R, or 2!

That's right, I start seriously looking for an 850-R, and not only do I find one (that I posted about here: https://volvoforums.com/m_62154/tm.htm) but I found 2 more this morning.

The second one is a Red 97. I don't know much about it, I have an email out for more information. Asking price is $4000 for it as well... I'd rather have the white one, but I'd take either of them. haha.

The 3rd car I found this morning is interesting. It's a Black '96. Here's what the ad says:
The good -

Runs great, shifts smoothly -very reliable and fast 240HP Turbo motor. Leather seats with suede inserts. Interior in good shape. Upgraded cross-drilled rotors + steel brake lines, also new shocks, springs and droparms (all performance). Also cat-back exhaust and intake. Also upgraded grill and headlights. Optima battery.

The Bad -

Needs paint on roof. Also missing one fog light. Needs heater core, runs fine, doesnt overheat, but smells like anti-freeze. Radio doesn't work, needs new power cord.
For the bad, how much money/time would be involved in a new heater core (most likely have the Volvo dealer do it, as I don't have time). I'm not too worried about the radio or fog light. Those are easy fixes and not really needed. What's needed is the car.

Why consider this one that needs work.... they are only asking $3,000 for it! I will email on this one for more info, miles, service history etc. in a bit. Thoughts? Does the price outweigh the "bad" issues?

Thanks for the input!

To me black outweighs everything. I just do not want a black car. I don't keep my cars clean enough to own a black one. I've never had one and probably never will.

If they are only asking $3,000 there is something more wrong or it has real high mileage or something. The other two for $4,000 sound like real good deals. One for $3,000 sound too good to be true, and usually that means it's not true.

I was thinking the same thing about the $3,000. Just thought I'd ask.

I got more info on the Red '97. It has 97,500 miles on it, needs a new right turn signal, A/C recharge, ABS brake work and "some TLC." I have asked about the ABS work - I'm guessing ABS module, just like our 850GLT. We may or may not look at it this weekend. Right now, I'm still super interested in the White '97 from my earlier post.

There's at least one more that I found, but it's a black wagon, no paint on the roof and a host of other issues. So there's a few around, I just need to find the "right" one.

Thanks again for the input.

I'm shocked you are finding so many available. They are really hard to find in Ohio. I would have a heck of time deciding between a white and a red. Unless one of them had the Charcoal interior and the other tan. I would take the Charcoal, but if they both had charcoal it would be tough.

By the way I lived in Colorado Springs for about four years from 92-96. I loved the weather out there, but missed all my family back here on the eastern side of the country. I had a house built right accross I-25 from the Air Force Academy. It was up on a hill and we faced it towards Pikes Peak.

CSprings huh? It's not too bad down there. I'm a CO native, grew up in SW CO and now live about 60 miles north of Denver. I don't think I could ever leave CO.

As to all the 850-R's, I'm shocked as well. I always keep my eye out for 850-R's and for the longest time, there weren't any to be found. I think what's happening, is the ones that are well cared for are just that, still being well cared for. The owners that have been beating on their 850-R's are finally done with them and trying to get rid of them. I think there's 4 or 5 for sale here in CO right now, and of those, there's only the 1 that I'm am strongly considering.

I'd would absolutely love to have this one: https://volvoforums.com/m_61788/tm.htmbut it's just beyond our budget. Even being able to consider purchasing an 850-R is pretty amazing right now.

I'll get one eventually... but I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later.

Well I'm pretty sure I helped him price that one. Read through some of the thread here and you will see where he was asking about pricing it. As I told him, he has a set of wheels and tires that are worth more than $1,000. 17" pegs are some damn nice wheels and he has new tires on them. That is one really sharp car. I still think it's priced on the high end of what it's worth, but not ridiculously high. Make him a reasonable offer and see what happens.

If you like five speeds another really hard to find car is the 98 S70 T5 with a five speed. That's what my son wants and there is one for sale on volvospeed.com in red with charcoal. I think he wants around $10K for it though and it's worth about $8,500.

I swear I should be in the car buying and selling business.

So find me an 850-R in great shape, for $4,000. j/k.

We're not exactly sure what we can afford. That's what we have to figure out tonight. After we work out the numbers, then it'll be time to get completely serious about finding the right car. Would you charge a finders fee? [sm=smiley36.gif]

I personally would go with one of the first two. I don't like the condition of the 3rd one, even if it's $1,000 less than the first two. Also, black exterior is one of the most common for 850s (mine was black too but I loved it).

But again I would wait till hearing what JimKW thinks.

>As I told him, he has a set of wheels and tires that are worth more than $1,000.
Make sure they're withinthe car'sspec in size. Some idiots put on wheels that are over-sized, which screws up the speedo's reading and the tyre may contact the body upon turning.

>After we work out the numbers, then it'll be time to get completely serious about finding the right car
A process that is never easy, as 85% (or higher number) of used cars require at least one major repair, as far as I'm concerned. This is mostly due to people's not taking good care. Steer clear of those who say "I'm a good driver". In my 33 years, none of those who say "I'm a good driver"was even close to being a good driver. A/C is generally out of refrigerant for cars older than 4-5 years; this is due to "good drivers" never running the A/C in winter. If you don't run the A/C in winter, the rubber seals dry up due to oil-starvation. I went off the topic but whichever car you choose, make certain that you test drive it and take it to a Volvo specialist for pre-purchase inspection.

Good luck,

JPN

Sounds like you're having pretty good luck on your own finding one. If you find something in this area that you would like let me know and I will take a look at it for you. But you seem to be having much better luck there that I would here. By the way if one needs the A/C recharged, it's 99% chance the evaporator is bad. Just get them to knock $1,000 off the price or walk away. We just did it on the one my daughter and son in law bought. He got a 95 850 Turbo Wagon for $3,000 knowing it needed another $1200 minimum in repairs. Cars probably worth about $5,000 in very good shape.

Yes you did Jim, thank you. I would be willing to part with the car to a good home for my payoff ($7500) otherwise likeI told him,I could take the wheels and the grill off .

FYI: https://volvoforums.com/m_61788/mpag..._/tm.htm#62332

seems fair to me.

Just as an fyi, I like the pegs on V8SRSLO's car better than the Volans on the other car. If you decide to sell the wheels and tires separate, let me know. They would look fantastic on my T5R and then I could put the Volans back on the 850 R where they belong. Then I would have three sets of wheels and tires in the basement. Are the pegs anthracite or silver? After going back and looking they seem more silver in the picture. The Titans that came on the 95 were pretty dark in color, but not very good wheels at all. Just looked great.
