Default help! 850 T5 dies on me

It has been going on for some time that my car dies on me, sometimes right after i start it, sometimes when I am already driving. It stops, the wheel and breaks go stiff, and it dies. Sometimes it starts right away, sometimes it take 6-7 attempts. What on earth could be the problem?? I've been to the service where they once cleaned or changed the fuel filter, after which it ran smoothly for a month or so. But now the problem is back and in the service they can't seem to find anything wrong with it.

Default RE: help! 850 T5 dies on me

Greetings.

The problem is most likely the fuel pump or the pump relay that is about to fail; we've been seeing quite a few of them lately. Is your CEL in the dash on?Try visiting a local auto parts store such as AutoZone to have a free diagnosis done for the on-board computer (Electronic Control Unit, orECU). This service is available for '94 or later 850's only and not sure if'93model can be checked with their scanner. If your 850 is '94 or '95, make sure to tell them that your car DOES have OBD-II scanner connection, in front of the shifter, right under the coin holder. If you don't tell them this, they'll tell you "we can only diagnose on '96 and later cars". Or, if your car is of '93-'95, you can retrieve codes on your own without any tools or testers:

For your benefit, I would strongly suggest that you forget the current shop thatworks onyour car, and go to a dealer or shops that specialise in Swedish/European makes. Many generic shops no longer can keep up with modern technology, mostly electronic control systems, and they'll keep replacing parts randomly until you have spent $1,000 to solve a problem that only needed $100. Dealers & specialised shops do charge more, but the extra cost is well worth it. However, note that there are notorious dealers that try to take advantage of you, if they determine that you don't know much about cars. This is pretty much universal to any business, so at least do your homework before visiting a shop, if you don't like to get taken (who does?).

I'll leave you with a list of maintenance tips for 850:

A good parts source for OEM parts:

So, try the above suggestions and let us know what you find.

Cheers,

Probably just what JPN stated. But if you said they replaced the fuel filter and it ran fine fora month or sothat sound kind of strange. Sounds like there is a chance that you have some crap in your gas tank that might be clogging the filter. You need to get it to somebody who knows Volvos though.

Must have been the neighbor's dog, I hate it when they do that. If there is an extremely disturbing odor from the tail pipe, that's it.

...if you live in Japan, you just cannot improve your sense of humor[8D].

NO-START CONDITIONS (Fuel System-Related):
This is one of the most annoying problems, but please note that it is not as serious as loss of brakes while the car is in motion. Anyway, in the case of 850, often this problem seems to be due to either a faulty fuel pump or the pump relay. The relay seems to be repairable with soldering, if not you can buy a new one for approx $52.50~$95 as of June 2007 (OEM or K.A.E ), depending on model years and whether your car is turbo or non-turbo.

*In the case of fuel pump, you have some options but the economical & reliable way is to replace the pump insert only; this is the core of the pump which consists of an electric motor & impeller assembly, hoses and clamps. There is wire-soldering involved as well. If the fuel pump is determined to be at fault, you can either go with OEM (Hella-Pierburg) or an aftermarket unit on Ebay. To check the fuel pump, have someone in the driver's seat and turn the key toON (not the "START") position. You should hear the pump running. If not, try tapping the bottom of the tank. If this rejuvenates the pump, it may be a loose electrical wire or may be in need of a new pump insert. The OEM pump is at $125 as of June 2007 at FCP Groton, and Ebay pump is about $70-$80. If you feel like replacing the pump insert by yourself, I would highlysuggest that you have a bottle of Class-B fire extinguisher, and do the work at a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling the fuel vapour, which can cause death. Also, do the work with an assistant. Remove ALL sources of fire, sparks, etc... If you have the slightest concern about the work, entrust it to a reputable shop; No one in the volvoforums.com can be held liable to vehicle, property and financial damage or loss, personal injury or death caused by any information or maintenance guidance listed in the forum. Working on the fuel system is extremely dangerous & hazardous without proper training, knowledgeand equipment. ALL instructions within the entire forum are REFERENCE PURPOSES ONLY!!!
