Default Help - Fuel deivery Problem?

Hey all, I'm new to the forum and a new Volvo owner looking for some help.
I've got a 1993 850, non turbo. Runs great, no weird noises, no strange lights. But yesturday it just died, and would nor restart. It felt like I ran out of gas, so I pushed the schrader on the rail, and there was presure, then the car restarted. This has happened 4 times in the last 2 days. I get out and relieve fuel presure and it restarts with no problem.
I'm assuming that this is a fuel pump problem, but do any of you have any ideas.

Could be the pump or the relay.

Greetings from Vermont.

In addition to Tech's suggestions, when was the last time the fuel filter had been replaced? Also, as a cheap altenative, try dumping a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner.

If none of the above resolves the problem, return here with more findings/details.

Wish you the best,

I actually put some injector cleaner in it today. I also cleaned the throttle body, wow, was it dirty. Then I started it without putting the air cleaner hose back on and tripped the check engine light. Probably due to not having a reading from the MAF. Is there a simple way to turn the light off, or am I stuck taking to someone with a Volvo scanner?

Hello agaion Emerald850,

No, you don't have to make donations to a Volvo dealer, since your 850 is of 1993. It has OBD-I terminal in the engine compartment, and you can clear the CEL via OBD-I. The procedure may be a bit tricky, though it isn't difficult. There are quite a few posts regarding how to clear CEL.

As I'm about to quit for the day (my eyes are shutting down), let me know if you need assistance clearing the code via OBD-I, I'll try to reply to you tomorrow, unless you can find a post.

Good night,

JPN

Thank you all.
CEL is reset, it was the MAF sensor.
Looks like it's on to the fuel filter and pump.

Hi again,

If it turns out that the problem is in the pump, relay or the filter, I recommend that you go with OEM parts, rather than some cheapo made in countries with cheap labour, unless you plan to keep the car less than a year.

1. Fuel pump (Bosch)
2. Fuel pump relay (Stribel)
3. Fuel filter (Bosch)
(4. Fuel system relay-Stribel)

FYI:

Good luck,

Hello everybody... can anybody tell me where is the fuel pump relay? does anybody have a picture of it? I am having problems starting mi Volvo 850 Turbo wagon, but it is just sometimes. Sometimes it starts fast and sometimes it doesnt. I have used the fuel injectors cleaner and I didnt find leaks, so I think it isthe fuel pump relay, but i dont know where is it! the car runs really good, the problem is just starting it.
Thanks!

Wow I have the exact same problem with my 93 850 aka Volva. How do you test the relay , or do you just listen for the click when turning the ignition on?

My test for the relay is to bypass it. When you pull it out of the socket there are (on most of them) 4 pins. In tiny numbers next to each pin, molded into the plastic, are the pin numbers 31, 31b, 15, and 87. Jumper the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87. If the car fires up and runs then the relay is bad. If it still has no fuel pressure then the pump is likely bad.
