Depends on the year of the car. 95 and earlier can be done under the hood. 96 and newer has to have an ODB-II reader. Some 95's have both. Mine does. If you have ODB-II AutoZone or Advance Auto will read the codes for you.

Jim...when you say they can be read under the hood on 95 and older...how and what do I need to get started? I've got a 94 and a 95 both 850 wagons and trying to avoid my mechanic like the plague. Where can I purchase a gadget that will read and reset?

Thanks!

Try this link. I found it but didn't look at it very closely since I am at work.

Thanks very much, Jim! This is extremely helpful--I'm going to try it out right now! I'm also at work...but taking lunch with my Volvo today
