Intercooler pipe?
Hi, while driving home yesterday there was a dull "pop" sound from the engine bay, then my T5 lost any real acceleration, in fact it kind of started bunny-hopping when I pressed the accelerator. I popped the bonnet and noticed the hose had come away from the pipe, I figured that it hadn't been tightened properly last time it was at the mechanics. So I connected it back up and drove home.
Later last night I went out again, and the same thing happened, I was only a minute or so away from home so figured I'd just wait til I got back to have a look. By the time I parked up, there was a strong unpleasant odour coming into the car. Once again the hose and pipe were disconnected. This time I had a better look, it turns out the pipe has possibly been tightened too much as it is crimped on the underside (along the connecting part).
After I had the radiator replaced, the last time it was in the mechanics, I noticed a slight whistling noise each time the boost kicked in, but to be honest I thought nothing of it. Now I'm thinking that this damaged pipe was the cause.
Anyway, what I'm here to ask is, does the crimped pipe seem like it would be the reason for them becoming disconnected? I haven't noticed any smoke from the dipstick. There's occasionally a little bluey smoke from the exhaust when the boost kicks in (apparently) but aside from that I've not noticed any real problems with the boost.
Also, am I going to do any harm to the boost/car by continuing to drive it? And could I tape it, to create a seal at the crimped area, until I can get my hands on a new intercooler pipe?
Thanks.
Craig

I would try to get a smaller in diameter but wide rubber band and put it on the pipe. Also clean the inside of the hose and outside of the pipe really good of oil. Then put it back together and tighten up good. That should hold for a little while.

You can do a quick test once you screw a new band on and after the turbo has run a bit, turn off the car and squeeze the rubber hose. see if the system holds any pressure.
otherwise turn car on and soapy rag around the pipe, look for bubbles.

Tape is not going to hold pressure. Air will blow it off or escape. Don't boost, you'll be fouling your spark plugs. just get the pipe reconnected. Sounds like a bigger problem of your turbo surging? Is this the case? inconsistent boost. That's a failing/missing vacuum line.
Hi, thanks for your replies.
@tech I'm unable to find a band that would be anywhere near wide enough, and tightening the clip up just causes the pipe to collapse at the creased area. When I hit the accelerator the hose and the pipe seem to push inwards (towards the engine) and that's when they start coming apart.
@91shelby I couldn't see the pipe I need at FCP (it's the one on the right, wrapped in metal tape). I did find it at another couple of places, but even then I'm paying US$40+ on shipping to Australia. And I doubt that I'd even receive the pipe within the next 4 weeks.
@boxpin The sticker was already on the car when I bought it.
@kockyhardrockr The pipe I'm referring to is, on my picture, the one to the right that is wrapped in a metal tape. It's not cracked, but where it joins the hose, on the part that looks like it's threaded, it is bent/crimped on the underside. It must have happened when the mechanics replaced my radiator 3 months ago, I'm guessing they over tightened it and that's why it's buckled in on itself. Unfortunately, because it's been like that for a period of time it has a permanent crease in the plastic. I've managed to straighten it out but, as plastic does, any kind of pressure on it causes it to fail at that weak point.
I think my only option is to try and find a new pipe from somewhere in Australia (any recommended dealers would be greatly appreciated). Also could anyone confirm that "intercooler pipe" is actually what I should be asking for when I find a supplier? The part I want is the metal-looking pipe (on the right in the photo) that has 2 bends and joins 2 hoses.
Until I get a new one I was thinking I would slide the hose clip to the side, get some "magic silicone" tape (which apparently can withstand high pressures) and wrap it around the hose and pipe where they join, then wrap some gaffa tape over the silicone tape. Then finally put the hose clip back where it's supposed to be.

Hi, no, there is no metal sleeve inside the pipe. Is this sleeve, or something that would be suitable, available separately?
Thanks.
Cheers, tech
Unfortunately I'm finding it extremely difficult to find 850 used parts in Australia, or at least in South East Queensland. I think my only option will be to pay some ridiculous Aussie Volvo price or have one imported.
Thanks very much for your help.

Check the link. It's cheap enough at $40. It might be worth it to see how much shipping would be to Australia...

Thanks for that Mad Matt, the seller apparently doesn't ship worldwide but I've messaged them just in case.
I appreciate the heads up.
Craig.
