Default Intermitent Speedometer

My 96 850 turbo speedo has stoppedworking intermitently while driving. Sometimes when the car is shut off it will work again. Any ideas on what I need to replace to correct this. Thanks in advance for the help.

No, check engine light is not on, so I assume that there are no codes. It would come if there where would it not?

Sometimes there might be codes and no lights.

Sorry but I don't.
At work we have a Volvo based one. That is my favorite but it would set someone back about 3K.
The Actron work pretty good.

There could be codes in the ECM,ABS,TCM that could cause the speedo to stop intermitently

Tech orJPN,
Regarding the Actron scanner, I notice there are several different models. Any suggestion which model is good for reading and clearing codes? Also, how do they compare to the one IPD sells?

Both the speedo and the odo don't work at the same time, should I assume that it's that little $25 gear that needs to be replaced ?

No, I think that would tend to point toward broken wiring going to the speedo unit. When (not if) the gear breaks it takes out the odometer, but the speedo will still work.

That was along the lines was thinking (towards the sending unit or the gauge itself) after looking at the pictures for repairing the gear it is inside the odometer unit only. Thank you

Is your ABS/track warning lights on?
If so, you have a defective ABS module.

That was what I did to fix my speedometer problem.
Let me know if I can assist you any further.
