Key FOB, Can I buy any???
I have been looking all over the forums on where to find info on purchasing a remote for my 1997 Volvo GLT. I bought the car several months ago and it came with no remotes, I read somewhere that I needed to get some code from behind the glove box. I pulled the glove box out and didnt see any code or P/n...... Can anyone shed any light on this.. I hate to buy a remote only to find out it will never work with my car..... My central locking and unlocking works but a remote would be nicer ...
There were two versions of the remote keyfob on the '97 model. One was the basic alarm and remote and the other was the Guard system. The guard system is a completely different animal that uses a different receiver. It is also part of a fairly elaborate alarm.
Assuming that you don't have the guard system retrofitting is very easy.
First you need to determine if you have a remote receiver. As you alluded to, the standard receiver is located next to the glove box more or less on the A pillar. Here is a picture of one (This one is upside down from its normal mounting).

If you do have such a box write down the part number off of the box as well as the FCC identifier. This will allow you to purchase the proper remote keyfob.
If you don't have such a box look for the green colored connector that is plugged into the top of the receiver in the picture. If you have that connector you will need to buy both the receiver and the keyfobs to make the system work. They do come up on eBay fairly often. I think I paid $35.00 for the receiver and a matching keyfob for my son's '96. Since you have the power locks you should have everything else that you will need and it is simply a matter of plugging in the receiver and programming the key fob.

Wow thanks for all that info.... I didn't see that box but Ill have to look again.. ... My central locking works and unlocks everything. The other day I looked the car using the driver side key but left one of the windows open, so I reached in and opened the door, well when I did that, the lights flashed and the horn started to beep. So I put the key in the drivers door and unlocked them and everything stoped... So it seems to have some sort of alarm....
Well Today I went over to the local salvage yard and was able to pick up 2 of these Alarm modules for 10 bux.. Now I need to get a remote.
They both came out of 97 Volvos. Both boxes have a big "A" on them and box one has a set of numbers "209257" and below the "A" is "WG1G114B 503BB2A"
Box 2 has "162524" and below the " A" is "WG1G114B 411BB2A
what set of Numbers am I looking at when looking for a remote?

None of those numbers correlate to the part number. On the label that is screen printed on the face of the unit look for either part number 9148647 or part number 3545654.
