The knock sensors only retard timing. They generate an electrical signal in relation to a particular frequency when the engine is knocking or pinging. If they go bad they can't generate that signal to the computer. They would act like they were unplugged, trip a code most likely but couldn't hinder the ignition from firing. When they fail the problem is the ignition does act normally and when it starts to ping or knock it keeps doing it.

MAF signal to the computer shouldn't affect ignition (shouldn't). The MAF signal should be used for injector pulse width adjustment (rich / lean).

Alright, I've had it. I'm at my wits end with this problem and I think I have to concede and take the car to someone with better manuals and some better diagnostic tools . Is there anyone from the Santa Fe NM area that is reliable?

Kent.

Man, there is an awsome shop in Albuquerque that works on Volvo's. It's just about downtown. They even service some guys Yellow sedan there from Santa Fe. Not sure what a tow fee is to there if you can get it there. They are called IVS.

I dont understand why there is nobody around my area that has a Volvo. I know of one on the other side of Sacramento.

Took my car to "Cutting Edge Automotive" in Santa Fe, NM, took them 3 hrs. and they figured it out! Apparently in 1999 Volvo changed how they wired the Crank sensor into the ECU. If I would have crossed the wires instead of matching the colors dam car would have started, who would have known? Oh well at least its running again. A huge thank you to everyone who tried to help, it really was very much appreciated, Kent.
