Default Possible Starter Issue?

hello all

I was given a 1997 volvo 850 to drive for the summer as long as I make it run right.

The problem:
When cold it will start fine. After running i try to start it and the starter spins and you hear a clunk, turn the key off then turn again and it will start.

Does it sound like the starter is not engaging properly?

Yes, I would suspect the starter, or possibly a broken tooth on the flywheel. The latter is pretty doubtful if it starts fine when cold, but is still a possibility

Hey now Meb7070,

One possible thing that it maybe is the brushes that are in the starter.

Over time they do wear down and can cause what's called a "dead spot" which will cause the starter to not want to turn, in turn not extending the starter armature which engages the fly wheel and turns the engine over starting it.

Removing the starter is an easy job and replacing the brushes is, also, very easy. The whole job from start to finish might take an hour. And that's taking your time.
