Default rear main seal leak...

Hi! Well, I have a 96 850 turbo with a "rear main seal" leak. The mechanic wants $1400 to fix this. Do you guys think this is reasonable?

I just got my car back from an independent mechanic specializing in Volvos and he only charged me $829.95, labor and parts. I suggest trying to find someone else. Was it a dealer that gave you that quote?

Well, $800 sounds a lot better than $1400! The mechanic is just a local guy, but the only advertised volvo mechanic in the area. Where is your mechanic located? I am in the midwest. And if anyone else can recommend someone I would be happy to go for a drive to get there. I bought the car from a guy who told me it leaked a pint every 3000 miles. I didn't have it checked by a mechanic and believed the guy. He lied big time (he even put some insulation under the engine to soak up the oil until I figured things out), and now I have a major problem to contend with. He offered to take the car back..for $750 less than I gave him for it, but refuses to stand up and be reasonable. I'm assuming I have no legal leverage since I signed up for the screwing. Live and learn I guess. Thanks for the reply, and I welcome any other comments, suggestions, directions, etc. thanks!

Erick
