Rear Main Seal Replacement Question

Went to replace the seal and noticed symmetrical slots in both sides of the inner portion of the crankshaft? The part that the seal would cover when in place.. is this normal? I'll post a picture ASAP!

Need to see it but there should be a stop lip machined into the seal area so most likely you'll be fine.
