wheel hub is completely removed, a I'd control arm, strut, and hub/spindle. also, the shaft and outer joint separated from the inner part that goes into the transmission. the back side of the inner joint is all that's left...and its out enough that i can slide my pinky finger between it and the transmission.

Yea, I'm with Kiss or whomever said get 2 things behind there at 180 degrees and give it a stab. May have to get some help. I had to use a 18" lug nut crow bar to get one out. I think I actually use my legs a few times.

The bad thing about the job I did was that I pulled a pair from the junk yard then the car. So I almost doubled my work. Really sucked, my hands are still sore 4 days later. I don't know how guys did it before all the power tools they have now.

Wait, you have successfully gotten past the snap ring if your out that far. I didnt realize that. The snap ring is only the very first part of the move. There is really nothing stopping you from there. May be best then to apply even pressure to remove it.

And yes, I'm still fighting with it.
You should have one of the stores order one in. It's part of their "tool loan" program so they should have access to one in a day or two. Might make your life easier. They almost always have the slide hammer.

Autozone Part number for the "horse shoe" adapter #27058
The slide hammer is #27033

Here is the splines and what you are up against. Can you push it back in, rotate it a bit then try again?

Just does not make sense. There is nothing holding it but that snap ring...nothing.

Oh man give it some time before doing that. There is also another attachment for the slide hammer you can try. It is an adapter to connect Vise Grips to the slide hammer.
I was talking with another guy on another forum. He was working on it for days and used the vise grips on the slide hammer and got it.

I don't like the horse shoe setup. We used to have a setup like that at the dealer for the P2 cars and it never used to work very well.
With the Vise Grips you can clamp good on the inner joint and pull straight out.
The horse shoe setup is pulling from behind the cup.

Man, I know the feeling. I could have broken a few bones in my hands working on that Maxi's axles the other day. I did cut my thumb pretty good, should have went and got a few stitches but just taped it up.

If you wrap a cable around the shaft then get some jerk weight on the end of it with about 2 foot of slack, maybe you can jerk it out of there. If you take it to a mechanic, it'll likely cost you less than $200 to get it taken care of, plus a $75 tow. If it's not worth that, sell it on craigslist you'll likely get more.

rspi: thats the most likely plan at this point in time. I'm a college student (again) and cant afford expensive repairs.

Have you tried putting the shifter in neutral?
