OMG, all this trouble for the axle replacement now has me concerned as my axles are in need of replacement, boots broke a year ago and I am about ready to afford this change. Want to do the 302mm brake upgrade at the same time.
Not to discount your efforts ibified and the broken hand, but you got me worried. I am looking to embark on this in a few weeks when the rain pretty much stops here in PDX. Garage is full with other things, so I have to work outside in my driveway.

I am praying for you that it finally comes together.

The Vise grips will clamp onto the cup. Kind of like in the vid.

given that we did about 3 hours of solid pounding with the horseshoe tool and a 5 lb slide hammer and got it to move exactly zero in that time frame, i find it hard to believe that a couple light tugs is gonna get it out.

I am not saying it will be easy like the vid. I was saying to try that method.
If you were closer I would have come and give it a shot.

Man, I didn't know what I was getting into doing those things last week. I may have passed on the job but it did work out for me.

I dont think you could have known this was going to happen. This is such a freaky on-off. I dont know if it will help any of this but you should be able to see through the differential from the other side with a flashlight.
Its to bad there are spider gears in there as you could put a rod in from the other side and pound on it.

Has anyone else tried a tie rod separator to get the axle out of the transaxle? It looks like a big tuning fork. It works great for me.

Yeah, sadly, i think that the best course of action at this point is gonna be to just write the transmission off. I guess I'll just have to hit the junk yard this weekend and see if i cant find myself a manual transmission....OHDAMN!

The cost of repairs are VERY HIGH sometimes. That's why I walk away from work people ask me to do when they don't like my price. If you hurt yourself, they will do nothing about it, what can they do. But you'll have to deal with the pain and doc bills if it comes to that. I'm glad it's not me. I'd probably hook the dang thing up to another car and jerk the thing off the jack stands, oh, wait, I don't have jack stands... Off the jacks.

This guy has the nightmare of all CV axles. Most pop pretty easy with just a firm pull or by using screwdrivers or prybars as close to opposite each other as you can get them.

I wouldn't suggest or recommend the "fork". Other ways are easier and safer than putting something against an aluminum housing and pounding on it. Again, it shouldn't take much to get them to pop loose but that fork might just end up on a weak spot and you crack the case. I'd get the horseshoe or vise grip and slide hammer first. MHO

Horse shoe and slide hammer got me nothing but a broken hand. I'd recommend dynamite.
