95 850 wagon, has a rusty hole (about the size of a dime) on the top of the muffler (big box). Would have never expected a hole on the top. Anyway, the pipes seem to be intact, anyone ever have any luck with a patch? was thinking about making a clean cut to the pipe in front of muffler, dropping it down and pop riveting a nice stout steel patch over the hole. Do the ol soup can / hose clamps resplice. Does any of those muffler goop stuff actually work? Dave

 

If you're planning to keep the car for more than 6 more months, replace the muffler. If you have a rust hole, you have other areas that are not in good shape in that section. You're likely to discover them during your patch job. Also, pipe splices only work if they're done right too. Otherwise they increase the noise and fail prematurely.

Save yourself surprises and frustration. Spend $200 on a muffler and you won't have to do it again for a long time.

 

I've never had any luck trying to patch a muffler with the "kits" they offer at the auto parts stores. I'm with VTBricked, replace the muffler. You don't necessarily need to go back with a stock one although that's the easiest but cutting the muffler out will be easier than trying to patch it only to end up having it fail and being back in the same position fairly soon.

Then again, if you have an extra 400 bucks laying around now would be the best excuse to go with the OBX stainless steel exhaust !!

As for the can and stainless steel hose clamp pipe repair I've used that and it works great.

 

Clean the rust off the area and use a healthy dose of furnace cement. It doesn't need to be pretty.

Either Patch it or go to the junk yard... I dont know what your yards prices are but all the ones by me sell the 850 mufflers for like $20

 

Ozark / Matt- yeah it would only cost apiece me a buck to scope out my local u pull it yards. Might find a car with a new exhaust that got smashed or blew its engine. I just plain dont have 260 bucks to buy a new system. (much less 400 for stainless!) Just like it to be a bit quieter for the winter. Dave

 

Well, if you do some fitting you can get a couple adapters at any auto parts store and either a glasspack or original style (not Volvo) muffler and fit that cheap new muffler in place.

 

Think I found the solution to my rusty muffler problem- I found a good solid muffler and pipes at my local u pull it yard yesterday for $6.50. from behind the cat all the way to the chrome tip on the end. Came off a V70 wagon (putting it on my 850 wagon). And all I had to do was pop off the rubber muffler support donuts and pull it out from underneath.

Actually there was another V70 sedan that had an even nicer system (would also be $6.50) but the pipe diameters are bigger. Would that maybe have been a turbo? didnt think to look under the hood for turbo reference.

Might just buy it as a spare or as a Craigslist sell. Dave
