Default service light will not reset

A freind of mine has a 95 850 glt and just had the engine replaced. we have tried to reset the blinking service light but it comes back on as soon as you start the car. we reset using the A7 trick and it does go off. But once you start the car it comes back on. We took it a Volvo shop and had them reset it and same thing. They said he needs a new cluster and it would be well over $300. Is there a way of disabling the light or fixing the problem with out changing the cluster?

Thanks
Shawn

Can't get much simpler than that.

Does the cluster have a little rubber plug in it by the speedo?
