So I recently purchased a 1995 850. I was putting it up on the stands to inspect the tie rod replacement job the car needs and found I cannot break the wheel studs free. My impact was useless and so was a breaker bar and 4' cheater pipe. The socket skipped on the head on the two I tried to break loose. I am no stranger to wrenching on my own vehicles, however this is my first Volvo and the first car with studs not lug nuts so my standard approach of just heat the hell out of the lug nut and soak it in PB blaster or cutting it off do not seem like the appropriate action to take (as I'd like to save the stud and not contaminate the brake pads). Any tips or thoughts before either I drill them out or get some bolt extractors and a torque multiplier?

 

They do seem to build up a lot of required breakaway torque sometimes. I think the shape, which is a bit unique, and the metals both contribute. if you rounded them off I don't have any advice. It gets ugly at that point. In my opinion the friction is between the bolt head and the wheel.

 

They are not rounded yet. I stopped before I got to that point. Once the socket "skipped" a corner I stop and come up with a plan. I'm going to just head the sobs up and hose them with solvent, brace the breaker bar on a jack stand and drive fwd. If that doesn't work I'll have to come up with a plan C.

 

Got them off. Nice tight fitting socket, braced the breaker bar on a block of wood on the ground and drove the car fwd. Cracked them right loose. Now I play the waiting game on parts.
