Default Speaker assistance needed

All,

I need to replace the front door speakers and the dash speakers in my son's 95 850 sedan. I have found some nice speakers with the necessary mounting adapters for the doors at Crutchfield, but I have come up with nothing for the dash.

Can anyone point me to where I can find decent aftermarketdash speakers? Or, if anyone has installed something other than thefactory type dash speakers, I would appreciate any and all info.

Many thanks,

Glenn

Good evening Glenn,

As long as the shape, size and input impedance (usually stamped on the back of the speaker with Ohm symbol) match the OEM specs, I think you can pretty much use any speaker. You might want to take one of them off the car and bring it & compare at audio stores, if there is one within driving distance.

You may also be able to try speaker mfgs' web pages. Googling might be of some use too:

Good luck,

JPN

All,

After I posted thsi message, i go to thinking along the same lines as JPN. I went to the local audio store and test fit a pair of 3.5 inch Blaupunkt 2 way speakers. They will fit easily, and all that it looks like I will have to do is use some metal straps to make mounting adapters. I will try and tackle this project this weekend if the weather behaves. Once i get it done I will post howit all worked.

Thanks,

Glenn

P.S. Red Turbo 850. Yes, the dash speakers meaning tweeters.

This is just me, but if I was doing the dash and front door speakers, I would also do the rear speakers. To me they are the weak link in the 850 speakers anyway. The only time I have replaced speakers was on my 94 850 Turbo and I had factory speakers put back in. I was still under waranty at the time though.

I would think Blaupunkt would be pretty decent replacements though. When I had my Porsche I put in a brand of speakers named Focal. Man were they awesome!! But the overall sound in the Porsche was never as good as the factory system in the Volvo. The car itself just made too much noise and you could not stop the sound of the outside air through the windows. It sounded great with the engine off and sitting still though.

The dash speakers are 3" and I suggest you go with a componet set for the front doors and run the seperate 1" tweeter to dash speaker location.

It will sound a lot better.

Boston Acoustic makes great speakers and their low end line is great. I had them in my 95 850 NA. I used their 3" in the dash, 5 1/4" in the doors and a set of their 5x7" components in the rear deck.

But like I said I would get a 5 1/4" component set for the front doors and run the seperate 1" tweeter to the dash location.

If it was my son's car, he would be figuring it out and doing it himself. But I would have never let him figure out what to put in my car when he was young. He would have had some big subwoofer replacing the back seat. Now he drives a 98 V70 R with factory stereo.
