Default Starter Replacement

Hey everybody,

My starter went out a couple days ago in my 1994 850 and it looks fairly simple to replace, but before I get in over my head I was wondering if anyone had any advice on replacing it. Has anyone ever done a DIY like this before?

Yes, you can take it apart and flip the armature around so the contact point are fresh. I have never looked for new brushes for the motor but most likely they are not worn completely out.

Lots of people have replaced their starters themselves.

I think the link is excessive. I have pulled a starter out without taking the shroud off or many of the other items. Get it released then pull it out towards the battery.

c4rpe_d1em, did you want info on replacing it or rebuilding it ?? When I read the question I'm not confused about what you're asking as it says "replace" twice.

Doing a starter is like doing a radiator in that there is more than one right way to do it and following the book way may not be the easiest or quickest. The book says a radiator needs to come out the bottom but plenty of people take it out the top. With a starter you're supposed to remove the intake but plenty of people have posted instructions on doing it with intake in place. It's just a link to give someone an idea of how to do it. It's not the only way and yes you might have a different way and someone else might have a different way from the video and yours. Whoever has the easiest way please post it for the rest of us.
