Default Is the turbo engine/ NA engine the same????

Hello we are picking up a dinar / parts car that has a naturally aspirated engine. Is this the same engine internals as my R??? It is the same year car as my R.
I was thinking about rebuilding the long block out of the NA car for my R???? Is this possible ?

You would need to punch a hole (drill) for the turbos oil return line. The internals should be the same except for the exhaust valves. The turbos use a filled valve to handle more heat.

Not same internals. 8.5:1 compression ratio on turbo/R motor; 10.5:1 on N/A.

Missed that. The crank and rods are the same but different pistons.

Aren't the cams also different specs?

Thanks guys I saw that the pistons had more compression.
I didn't think about the oil return line!
And I had read that the NA cams are better and are used for a mod on the turbo cars? Is this true?

We're about to have to purchase a new turbo. I would like about 20-22 psi boost. What turbos would work for this ? And where is the best place to buy one ?

Yes NA cams, when properly timed, will add a little HP but more importantly move your torque curve closer to the lower rpm range.

The NA cams have a longer duration. They are a bolt in swap and offer a bit of a gain. The more modifications you do the more benefit you might get from the swap.

Don't focus on how much boost for a target/goal. Figure out what you're looking to build as far as power and what you're going to use it for (e.g. track car vs DD?). Then go from there.

Main thing on the turbo engines is to let them breath. N/A cams give you half a mm more lift which is what you care about; but they have about 4 degrees more overlap, which you don't really want on turbo engine, so you have to modify the cam timing to compensate for that.

Again, figure out what you are trying to build first and go from there...

Thanks for the reply. I would like to build a good track day car built for road racing and just fun. It could be a daily driver as well for my son.minhave two cars one I'm thinking would be a total trac car the other is my sons.
Any suggestions on where I can get pistons, gasket sets, rods, turbos, and so on?

If I hadn't already bought my 300 dollar beater and started to rebuild and modify stuff a Volvo is likely almost at the bottom of the list for a car I would intentionally go out and buy with the purpose of turning it into a track or autocross car due to parts availability and cost.
If you are starting from scratch and looking to build something for competition, why a Volvo ??

Don't get me wrong, I like my car but I've sunk a lot more money and time into it than I would have needed to had I chosen a car with the intention of doing performance modifications.

Great question. I like being different and if you really think about it I'm getting cars next to nothing. It still cost less than maintenance on my airplane. The only volvo at the track running with the Porsches. I love it. The engine on this car I believe is very strong compared to others. Tunes are basic along with gaining horsepower. We just build my dad a 347 stroker and we have 7800 in the motor alone. Tale the volvo engine minus some parts and I'll still be way below that price range.

sounds like you have money to burn, so by all means make a fast Volvo and document it. we would all enjoy it

What kfrog said in post #13. VS has lots more members interested in go-fast mods than around here, but many of us are on multiple volvo forums too.

I would start by reading this if you haven't already.
Modifying Fwd Turbo Volvos (Read, Don't Comment) - Performance Modifications - Volvospeed Forums

You can make some outrageous hp with these engines but you obviously lose some reliability too when you go there. I've done what I would consider mild mods, but IMO, makes the car very fun and still fine as a DD. Everyone has their opine about how much pwr is enough and that usually evolves with time and experience. Sorry, I am not a good resource for engine internal high perf parts sources since mine are stock for most part.
