Turbo Mode doesn't work
Hi All,
I have a 1996 850-T with Automatic transmission. Recently, I was travelling at 120 kmph on Cruise Control . Suddenly , I heard a click and the vehicle just spluttered a bit. Afterwards, I am noticing that the vehicle doesn't go to the turbo mode even if I press the accelerator a lot. (The indicator goes maximum upto the hafway mark, whereas it used to go the white side also like more than 90 degrees.). This has affected the acceleration a lot.
Can anyone please help and tell me what could be the problem.
Thanks a lot.
Enjoy,
Ajay

Your still boosting but not as much as before?
- Check your turbo hoses to see if they haven't blown off, and also check them for tears/cracks/holes/etc..
- Also check your vaccum lines for the same things.

Hi S70 Driver,
Thanks , I will have a look , but I am not very much into the engine stuff(just trying to learn), so appreciate if you could tell me where and what to look for. Also , it happened suddenly while driving and with an audible click, so I think some controller /switch has gone.
Anyway , let me check also and update.
Thanks a ton.

Turbo Hoses
1. Check the Upper Intercooler hose, it will be going into what you think is the radiator but actually is the intercooler. It is a black rubber elbow hose.
2. Check the Lower Intercooler Hose, it is also a black rubber hose. Going to the bottom of the intercooler.
3. Near the turbo there will be a pipe, you will see yet another black rubber coupler attaching the upper intercooler pipe to the turbo area.
I know there is at least one more hose if not two more. TECH could we get some assistance in here.
Thanks
TECH also correct me if I am wrong with the above info. Thanks

Hello,
Today I finally gathered enough courage to look under the bonnet
I can see a black hose (1.5 in. diameter) going inside the radiator on my left hand side.It was not loose but i still tightened it.but no difference.i couldn't see any other hoses. Nothing seems to be out . Also I have noticed that the car is guzzling more gas than usual ( Could be the temperature, it is 50 degrees centigrade in the daytime man!!!!!)
btw, you mentioned some hose going from the turbo. Forgive my ignorance, but where is the turbo....how to identify.
thanks a lot for your support. i hope something works out. It is too costly to get the dealer here .

I am n ew to this, but I have a 96 850 turbo and after reading this post I went and looked around and found a hole in one of my intercooler hoses. It is the on that comes from the bottom and connects to the hard plastic tube at the top. It also connects to another rubber hose at its bottom connection. i don't know which one to buy as there are so many different hoses. Also is it a big hassle to replace this (draining any fluids and how to replace if necessary?)
Thanks

As Tech mention, not difficult to replace. No fluids to drain as the intercooler only has air going through it.
Here is a reputable vendor to purchase from:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo850reverseintercooler.htm
Scroll down and there will be a diagram to help you ID the piece you need.
Another option is to upgrade to silicone hoses since one needs replacing anyways. Might as well do the rest for a piece of mind.

Very easy to install new TURBO HOSES. I did a writeup for 99+ Volvo's with ETM for turbo hoses.
