Default Volvo 850 2.3 T5 Compression? Please help :)

Hello, what is the good compression range to t5 engine?

I bet t5 engine has lower compression than 170hv non turbo version?

I did my readings cold, yes a bit stupid but anyways....

My car has 250 thousand kilometres.

1. a bit over 12 bars
2. a bit over 12 bars
3. a bit over 12 bars
4. a bit over 12 bars
5. 11.2 bars (is this an issue?)

Car is burning some oil. But it only smokes when i like rev it on idle so the turbo starts to charge. Then it smokes. Doesnt smoke visibly when its not charging the engine. How these turbos normally fail? My charger got 250 thousand kilometres too like a car so its still same charger never repaired or changed.

So i think this is a turbo failure? Valve housing rubbers or what those are called, are working fine (doesnt smoke when im breaking hard with only gears.) Sorry for bad english but i think you guys understand this what i mean

Im gonna try the test when engine is fully warmed. Should i expect compression raise a bit?

This is very good by my calculations, given the kilometers on it. A warm engine will make little difference. Throttle wide open while cranking with no more than 5% difference among cylinders is what you want.
All depends upon how much oil is being burned over a length of time. Turbo leakage and valve guides and seals also leak at this age.
No worries unless you burn more than a liter in 3000km.
I would lean toward more losses through the turbo.

yes i did it with throttle wide open.

Anyways plugs looked pretty good, they were wery old and wearn but im gonna replace them. Anyways this tells something about this thing too, i mean it really looks like turbo is giving up. If it was my top end, plugs should look **** with that kind of smoking.

I got new td04-16T coming

In fact, turbo pressure is a bit low too (about 0.4 bars???)

Hi And1 and welcome to the site.

The car doesn't have a lot of miles/km on it. You need to read and understand the NEW 850 OWNER thread. Make sure you have a good timing belt, new PCV system and keep the oil changed. These turbo's can last in excess of 400,000 km when properly cared for. Do not enter boost on a cold motor and let them cool down after boosting before you cut the engine off.

RSPI and boxpin: Thank you very much for the info!

Okay so im pretty sure there is some strange on my PCV system at the moment.

Does Air pump do something with this? Fuse number 8 = air pump was taken away. I put there a new fuse but nothing happened.

How i should start seeking this? How i can check im not missing that air pump? Where is it?

EDIT: Car is 1995 model, so missing an air pump fuse is normal cause there is no air pump at all?

Anyways, gotta check the PCV system and clean it like that friendly moderator told me
And im gonna clean the throttle body thing too (sorry for bad english..) <--- Can i use bräck cleaner for that

I usually just change the PCV parts, they are often to brittle to clean up and re-use.

When you take the intake manifold off, make sure you clean out the EGR ports and the port on the far end of the manifold. The throttle body is suppose to have some kind of coating on it that can be damaged by cleaners with certain solvants so you should use "throttle body cleaner" for that. Some of the ports on the intake manifold are so hard and stopped up that you may have to use tools to break the stuff up and scrape it off. Built up like carbon. Make sure you look at a couple of instructions and read the entire thread in the 850 DIY = Hot topic thread. You want to take your time and do it right the first time.

Some cars have air pump, some cars don't. Other's have EGR's some don't. Sometimes tunes can delete a air pump or EGR so you can first look for the parts on the car, then check the VIN on the Volvo car site (it has a VIN decoder), then know what your tune has done. If you have a car that has been modded, you're dealing with a puzzle.

But that air pump is one of the PCV parts right?

No, the air pump is part of the emissions but not part of the PCV. It is suppose to aid the car in maintaining a smooth idle during cold start.

Also, just checked my manual, it says that the compression should be between 156 - 185 psi (11-13 kg/cm2)

Okay thank you for checking the manual. My lowest reading was 11.2 bars cold from fifth cylinder, others were a bit over 12 bars so should be fine ofc im gonna check them again warm when i change fresh new plugs in a few days

This is a great forum, people know about things and its nice to see you helping guys like me.

I live in Finland, and volvo forums here are pretty crap compared to like this forum lol Keep it up guys looks very nice, has been a VERY helpful place to me.

Im gonna call previous owners (two people) and ask about that air pump and a car, is it removed or what and gonna ask other things too like mods etc.

But i think car is Standard at the moment. It came with different ecu which had much more boost and it even fuel cutted with that, but i put the cars own ecu with std program and it started to work very fine, ofc wasnt giving that much power.

95- = EGR
96+ = air pump
