Volvo 850GLT non turbo 95' Engine Light
Hi, my girlfriends 1995 Volvo 850GLT Non-Turbo has the check engine light on. When i went to get it checked it was P0440 - Evap Emission Control System Malfunction
Does anyone know what I should do? She is tight for money at the moment, and i want to fix this car, if its a sensor or something i can get at under the hood ill do it, but i need to know where to start. I tryed tightning the gas cap already. Thank you.

Hi,
I was going to suggest the gas cap as well. The thing is, once the check engine light is on, you have to reset it or it will stay on even if you have fixed the problem. First off, I would take off the gas cap and check the seal to make sure it is not torn or cracked. Then put the cap back on and tighten it until it clicks.
To reset the light, you are forutunate you have a 95 model, as you can reset it without a code scanner. I do not have the procedure in front of me, but you reset it using the diagnostic connector in the engine bay. DO a forum search and you should find it. IF not, simply go to your local AutoZone (or other auto parts store) and ask to rent/borrow their code scanner. You can also use that to reset the light. If after resetting, the light stays off, you are good to go. If not, we can dig into it more.
Good luck,
Glenn

Hi,
Procedure:
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html
Anew gas cap is available at AutoZone for a few dollars (Stant).
If the cap doesn't solve the problem, inspect the Evaporative Emissions System in the engine bay. Check for rubber hose connection integrity, cracked hoses, elbows, etc... in the system.
If your GF plans to keep the car for more than a year, I suggest that she/you buy a Haynes service manual (about $15-$20).
Cheers,
JPN
