Default What cylinder heads will interchange?

I am repairing a customer's '94 850 Turbo, which I have determined to have both a burned exhaust valve AND a cracked head. This car has the 2.3L Turbo engine. What cylinder heads can I use here? Specifically, can I use the head from a '97 2.4L low pressure turbo, or does it need to come from a 2.3L? I could wait until tomorrow and ask my usual salvage yard to do an interchange, but I'd kind of like to find out tonight. Thanks!

I am not 100% sure but I think it needs to be a 2.3 only.

The head casting itself is the same but the valves are different, at least with a N/A. I haven't looked at the LPT variation.

Okay... I checked on this one, and it turns out that all 850 turbos from 1994 to 1997 have the same head (thank god!) Why do I say this? well... time for a little confession. I did a PCV system on a customer's 94 850 the other day, and the next day, I get a call that the car has no power and is shaking. I go to check it out, and no compression on cylinder 4. do a leak- down test... it's an intake valve. My dumb **** probably dropped a bolt or something while working on it and didn't see it. So... I have to change out the head. And I know where I can get a very good '97 850 2.4 Turbo head fairly inexpensively so that I don't completely lose out. Now I'm just out the cost of a head set, the head, and labor... ah, well. I guess I'll check the intake ports first next time before reinstalling the manifold

I have the head from my 94 850 turbo. Needs a mill but other than that its good. Blown head gasket and I waited to change it. Destroyed my block in the process(rust).

Thanks... but I found out that the head is the same on the known- good '97 850 Turbo engine I have access to. If it turns out otherwise, I may be talking to you

Along the same lines as the original question, I'm looking at a 97 v70 turbo wagon. Low kms compared to my 95 850 N/A. The v70 has a head problem whether its a gasket or the head. I'm told it had overheating problems even though the water pump is apparently fine.

Would the head from my 95 850 work on the v70 considering one is turbo and one is N/A?

cheers

you should be compatible with 850s and S/C/V70s up until they went to VVT. Search for Volvo part # 8111178 to see what other models use that head.

First, you have a 2.4L turbo.
Second, any turbo cylinder head from 94-98.

MT and tryingbe,

I have a 1996 850 NA with MT. The head is ok, but prior owner was really negligent.

In case I need a new head, can this one (NA) be replaced with a turbo head, since the turbo models are much more available?

Thanks!

if you need to find a replacement head, you can search car-parts.com for a yard with the exact model you'd want. while the NA head should bolt right on, it may have different cams and valves so you'd need to research that.
