2000 C70 - routine drive today and all of a sudden there was a massive explosion ..even the car next to us pulled over. Sounded like a tire blowing out. On inspection we didn't see anything, but noticed AC was not working anymore. Compressor was not turning but clutch was working ok....what happened - in all my years of cars have never heard a AC compressor explode.

Are these hard to remove?

 

System has to have FREON recovered. May be all gone by now. Do some serious shopping around for a new compressor, $300-$500 each.Installing it mechanically not very hardm system maintenance to vac lines, inspedt evap/dryer etc and properly charge system hardest part unless u have the toools and did it B 4. Get new compressor, install it mechanically take to A/C shop for rest of inspection/servicing. JMHO
