Default Top won't complete up cycle.

Today I tried the power top on my '99 C70 for the first time. All went well going down but coming back up it stopped half way. The boot opened, the top came up with the front 6 inches from the header and the back window vertical, and then it would go any further. Any suggestions? I was able to put it back down, open the trunk and put it up manually.

That means there is codes in the system. It might need to be recalibrated.

Any idea how much time a shop charges for that?

Hello,

I just bought a 2000 C70 and the battery went dead last week. ( somehow I left the lights on)
I jump started it and my regular mechanic said that was not good and I have a burnt out bulb light.
(I can't see to what though) and now my top stops before going all the way down, and those metal locking prongs come out.
This happened twice before and then it worked, but now it won't work.
My mechanic said I need new battery anyway, since the orginal is 8 years old.
Any thoughts are very much welcome.

Thank you

Blair

also I already made an appointment with the Volvo dealer next week, since I read it may be those sensors need to be reset.
I guess I am asking two questions, one do I need a new battery? and two- would that help the top not closing?

If the car still starts fine battery is good.
The top might just need to be recalibrated.

Tech,

Quick question... If I were to get my top recalibrated would it improve the time it takes to go up, or down. When I press the button there is a 3-4 second delay before anything happens with my car. This is annoying to say the least, as its slightly longer then most stop lights are.

Thanks

S.

Maybe by 1 second. But when it doesn't look like it is doing something it really is. There is small motors in the back that are moving before you can see anything happening.

Drat, they told me it 140.00 just to walk in there. Damn. Would the battery going dead be what caused this?
Also, some people talked about big bucks with top problems. How much to recalibrate?
I was wondering if I blew something when I jumped the battery.
I looked at the top and it looks like fuses or a memory type chip set up on the right side.
My light warning is on for a burnt out bulb, but I can't find one.
After I jumped the car, there was a horrible plastic burnt smell inside, so I am wondering if that would of been a bulb.
I haven't even finished registering the car yet. What a bummer.

Thanks for you help.

I think usually 1 hour labor to recalibrate.
The bulb failure light came on after the jump start?

Yes it did.
I had to look it up in the handbook, since I had no idea what that icon stood for.

Well I feel like I dodged a bullet. They were able to recalibrate the top. They said it shouldn't have done that , even with a dead battery, since it has memory, but they thought I may of charged it backwards, (which I didn't) but I charged off a miata battery and they said maybe the memory was erased.
(though it still almost went all the way down)
The 2 mechanics looked at me when I told them I just bought this, and they said to me, sell it as fast as you can!
Apparently the early C70's have tons of problems with the top.
He said they are great cars as long as you keep the windows up and the top up.
After I bought this, (paid cash) I realized it actually did not suit my needs, ( handicap dad and his wheelchair have a very hard time in and out of car) and the kids just jump into the back since the power seat takes so long to move forward and what a pain that is.
I also was caught off guard at how little trunk space there is.
I can actually fit more groceries into my Miata.
So I am getting my Van repaired, (which I should of done in the first place) and putting this on Craigslist this weekend. I hope I just break even. I already dropped a grand in just 2.5 weeks with repairs and taxes and smogging it. It is whistleling now by the drivers side where it latches.
The guy told me someone had drilled out a hole to readjust the arm in the back and he wasn't sure what for. And one of the arms has been replaced. So obviously there has been some issues somewhere along the line.
The engine is good though! And it is pretty..I am in the East Bay in Cal, if anyone is interested. I paid 9k and I just want to break even.

Well the car is doing it again. I am so screwed now. I can't sell it and pretend I don't know there is a problem!
I won't complete the cycle but I got it to go back in and now I don't know what to do.
(like the last time, when it the problem first started)
Any suggestions?

Sorry to say but you might need to have the sensor replaced to fix it.

OK that settles it. I have been looking at C70 Convertibles and have found a couple that are HPT with a five speed, but after reading this, I think not. They sure do look nice though.
