Default 06 S40 Wheel bearing

Hi All!

I'm a newbie to the site. I need any info/help/tutorial on replacing wheel bearing from start to finish. I'm assuming it's my right bearing since the noise either stops or reduces when I move the steering wheel to the right, correct? Now, I am not entirely certain if it is the front or back bearing. My steering wheel vibrates/shimmies slightly at certain speeds 35/40mph >. I am not sure if that's a symptom in addiiton to the loud "whoomping" noise. What parts and tools does this require and a good place to purchase those? Estimate of cost? Time? Skill level? I am pretty decent with mechanical stuff so hopefully this is not out of my skill level.

Thank you in advance!

If I was you the first thing I would do is get a wheel balance which is inexpensive. I had a similar problem when I changed 4 new tires. 1 of the mechanics didn't balance my wheels correctly. Once they were rebalanced properly the problem went away.

Hey chinohayze-thanks for your advice! Ok, I will get the balance rechecked first. I did get my new tires put on at different intervals-purchased tires for the rear, then probably not more than a month later, bought 2 more tires so they moved the rear tires to the front and new ones went to the back. In retrospect, I think I noticed the noise after the first time. It wasn't that loud so I didn't think anything of it. I also noticed one of the tires-on the rear, I think (I'll check after work)- does not have one of those weights they attach to the lip of the tire rim. Maybe that could be the culprit?

Thanks!

You should stand there and watch him balance your wheels. Make sure the numbers on the machine are at 0 after he balances them.
