2002 S40 1.9L T Dies at red lights...
Hey guys,
So I just got back after about 8 months of being away (the whole time my S40 was just sitting with the battery disconnected), and decided to put the car back on the road. Of course, I had to jump the battery but other than that I initially didn't see any major problems (mind you, I have had an Engine Code for an Evapourative Emissions System Small Leak that I have NOT been able to locate yet but think it may be coming from the immediate aft side of the engine under the metal heat shield near the O2 Sensor. I just don't know what is down there yet that could be leaking).
So... I took the car out for a good burn (about 30-40 mins) and then came the issue....
When I am stopped at red lights, or just sitting idling in Park or Drive, the RPMs fluctuate between 700 and approx. 200 RPM, the Engine violently vibrates and sputters for a few seconds, and then the Engine dies. However, the car does start again immediately everytime, so I am sure that both the Battery and the Alternator are good. I have put a bottle of Water Remover in the full tank, but have yet to see any tangible results. I should also mention that my gas milage is the sh#@s right now as well.
Anybody got any suggestions?????

My first guess would be fuel. Keep topping off the tank with fresh fuel every time you're a couple of gallons down and see if this problem goes away.
If you have the energy you could drain/siphon/pump out the tank but I think I'd try the dilution method first. Maybe add a container of octane booster and a container of Techron.

Sounds a lot like a problem I had. I have the same year and model. And was actually able to fix with help from several members here. Try this link:
