Default A/C compressor

2001 S40 1.9 turbo.

The climate controls in the car are all turned off. the temp **** is on a hot temp. the A/C button "off" is lit. No ***** on defrost.

The compressor keeps kicking on and off. Once on, the sound is a bit ruff. Does not sound normal. My daughter says the A/c is not cold. I have some guages to check the feon later. More worried about the sound and the On/Off for no apparent reason.

With everything OFF, should the compressor kick on and off every few minutes?

sounds like you have a switch or POT that may be not working correctly or a sticky relay. You sure you have the AC button in off not on (check owners manual if unsure). The AC will kick on even when temp is warm on select air flow positions (ie if you are set for defroster, the AC is used to dry the air to prevent fogging even if you set the temp for heat).

I put the gauges on the AC system and best I can tell the compressor is bad. I get the same PSI reading on Hi and Lo sides.

Can anyone confirm?

did you do the reading while the engine was running and the clutch engaged (or cycling)? what was the reading on the low port during the test?

I did not document, but best I can remember with the AC clutch engaged it was 50 on both gauges. With it off and the engine running, maybe 50 low and 120 hi.

I will have to do it again this afternoon and document. I will edit then.
