Default Car drains battery and will turn off everything and stop in the driveway

Hello my volvofamily

I am driving a 2004 volvo s40, 2.4L sedan, petrol.
I once bought a battery for my car, the battery lasted for 1 year then started acting up. i decided to buy a new battery this year, July 2015. There was no problem until a couple of days ago, the car displayed the check engen light, battery, airbag, then it switched off and stoped when i was reducing speed at a traffic light. i jump started the car, drove for less than 1km and it switched off again...i borowed a battery from a friend to drive home, 100m from my house, the car stoped....what could be wrong

I suspect your alternator is not working well. You should have the voltage output checked and make sure the drive belt isn't slipping. You could also try disconnecting a battery lead when the engine is idling, if the engine stops, pretty much confirmed it's alternator related.

Yep, sounds like the alternator or its voltage regulator. If you have a standard VOM multimeter you can do some simple measurements. With the car off, you should see about 12.6V across the battery terminals. Now charge the battery or jump start the car. With the engine running you should see something in the area of 14 to 14.5V depending on engine speed. If you put a load on the alternator - ie high beams, rear defroster, blower all on at once, the voltage should stay over 13V. If you see less than 12.6 with the engine running you are running off the battery only and its even possible the alternator may be shorted and pulling current vs pushing. Once the voltage goes below a certain point, the ECU will fault and the car stalls.
