Default fuel line leak

Good morning all. A few weeks ago I had the fuel rail etc. apart to change the oil trap. This morning I had the fuel line pop off the top of the regulator and spray about 1/2 tank of gas all over. On my 03 there is a light blue ring that I thought snaped into the fuel line from the fuel pressure regulator side. I had this piece snapped in and all seemed fine (2 weeks/200miles) until this AM. This blue piece was just laying on the FPR when I disconnected things 2weeks ago and when I reinstalled the fuel line I put the blue clip up inside the female coupler. I have searched high and low for a picture but all that I have found show the blue clip on the fuel tank side of the fuel line where as mine in on the FPR/fuel rail side. My question is, is this a safety clip or a release tool to get the fuel line free from the regulator?(It almost looks like a Ford disconnect tool) Does anyone have a picture of this connection for an 03/04? Does the clip fit up inside the black female fitting? Thank you in advance for any info, feedback, or pictures/diagrams.

This fuel hook-up is different than mine, possibly an older set up. My blue clip is just a ring with 2 tabs pointing up. Mine clips in from the bottom, not the top.

This is how it is on the PH1-PH2 up to 2004.05.On the picture the 03-04 model with the aluminum up pipe from the turbo. After the new body style it could be different. To get ahead here would be important which year your car was really made.Perhaps a picture of the fittings. If you say yours is not like this then you must have the new body style which was made after 2004.05.

I'll have to check exact build date, but it definitly is a 2003 that I bought new in May, 2004 with 26 miles on it. Looking again at the picture, my fuel line is a hard plastic, not rubber and the connector(female end) is on the fuel line, not the FPR. I'll try to get my wife to take and load a picture as that is beyond my ability. In the mean time I safety wired it on with some SS wire and it can't pop up.
