I have a 2004 S40 1.9t, 4 days ago I entered to the car and listened music for about 20 minutes, then I tried to start engine and it showed a rough starting. Problem happens with either cold and hot engine. I first thought it might be a bad battery and found B+ cable alittle corroded but before having a new batt or cable I measured them getting 12V when off and 14V when idling. When turn the key to start position the dash board indicators blink rapidly and a clac-clac-clac comes from the front until engine starts. I had that sound in a BMW E30 and it was fixed by replacing starter solenoid, but in my S40 reaching the starter looks hard especially for a one-hand guy. Since I am new to volvo, I would like to know if something else should be checked before removing the starter motor.

 

Brush holder soldered back in place and engine starting like nothing ever happened.
