Default Loud exhaust sound

I was just driving back from work and my cars exhaust really started sounding very loud?! I didn't hit or run over anything, but I'm guessing this is either the muffler or catalytic converter. Any guesses? Car is a 2001 with 107,000 miles.

Also, do I need to goto a Volvo dealer for this, or should a local mechanic be able to replace. Any guesses at how much it'll cost?

probably the catalytic converter since the car has that many miles. You should be able to get it fixed at your local mechanic, i think when i got mine replaced it may have been around $1000.

could also have an exhaust leak...I would go to a volvo dealer to check it out unless you know of a reputable european/volvo mechanic...

With the engine cold, look behind the engine for any nuts backed off the studs for the exhaust manifold. You might have to reach back there and feel around. I had a nut back off and caused a sewing machine sound that was louder when the engine was cold. I tightened the nut and the noise went away.
