I have a 2000 Volvo S40. We were backing up and heard a loud pop on the front drivers side. Sound happens when we turn the steering wheel to the far left. Anyone experience a similar problem or have an idea of the cause before I take it in for service?

 

Maybe the upper spring seat bearing assembly is bad.

 

Thanks tech... I will let you know how it works out. I've had the springs replaced before(in the rear)when it just creaked all the time but don't think I've had much done with the front suspension. Seemed really strange that its when the wheel is turned counterclockwise and only occurs at the extreme traverse of the wheel but I'm guessing the symptoms match up with what I've read on the upper springseat assembly too. Hopefully does not drain the bank account for a repair bill.

 

Make sure you check the CV shaft. Some times the boot breaks in wierd spots and you only hear the pop at the extreme part of a turn.

 

Turns out front spring on driver side was broken. So...two new front springs and struts is the repair.
