Do 2002 S40's have the same issue with spring seats as 1995 850s? We recently had the spring seats replaced on our 850 which stopped the characteristic thunking sounds, then realized we have similar front end noises in our S40. The noises are not as heavy, but otherwise seem the same, as in the bumpier the road, the more the thunking happens.

The 2000-2004 models do have an issue with the strut mounts making a clunking noise when they wear out.
Take a look at the top of the strut where it sticks through the strut tower under the hood. The threaded shaft should be centered in the hole. If it's way off to one side you can bet the rubber mount is toast. Try to grab the rubber and see if pieces come off in your hand.

Very standard. I used an impact to spin the nut off the strut once the springs were compressed.
Just pay attention to the order in which the parts are removed and the orientation of the springs. If you are replacing the strut bearing make sure it matches the old one. I was sent the 2000 model bearing by mistake.
