Volvo s40 starting problem (I know about the fpr)
Hello, I own a 2001 S40. It has the starting problem that Isee a lot of people talking about. It started doing thisin the last 6 months, and it is basically taking way too many cranks to get started. My mechanic, who happens to be a good friend of mine found a used Fuel Pressure Regulatorfor 60 bucks with a 6 month waranty online. He replaced it and it has done NOTHING to fix the problem. It came off another S40 with over 100,000 miles on it so we are thinking it may have been a bad part as well. However, I would hate to send it back, order a new part (for about 200 bucks, which seems to be the average for a new FPR)that I know is "good", have it installed only to find out that it was not the problem to begin with. So my question is this: Is there anything else that could be causing this problem? Let me go ahead and say that Ihave had the Fuel Filter and Spark Plugs replaced within the last 12 months (before this problem started) and the car runs AMAZING once it is started! The check engine light comes on and goes off regularly, but he said the computer said something about theCatalytic Convertor and assured me if this was the problem, the car would not run right once started as well. The battery has not been replaced in quite a long time, however, it always has enough juice to get the car started in the cold 5-10 degree temp. mornings even with the long cranking times. Could it be the battery? Or the fuel pump? I just want it fixed. Should I go ahead and order a new OEM part and send the other FPR back?I am so confused. If anyone has an idea, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Well have him test the FPR and see if it is bad. It is very easy to test. After the car has been sitting for a while have him pull the vacuum line off the intake from the FPR. If gas comes out or it smells of gas in the vacuum line the FPR is bad.
