Default 06 S60 2.5 has lost AWD

My wife told me this morning that her car felt like it didn't have AWD any more. I took it for a spin and sure enough it's front wheel drive only. It shifts just fine and there are no lights lit up on the dash.

Any idea what the problem is?

The S60 AWD system is unique, because it normally operates as FWD. Only when the car detects slipping is when it engages the rear wheels and becomes AWD.

Could be many different things, Ie.. DEM may of failed, Haldex fuse blown, Spinal gear stripped. There is just too many things that can go wrong with these more fragile AWD systems to really help diagnose. Unless your wife heard any noises during the moment that the AWD failed. Best bet is probably to check the fuses (location in your owners manual) If that doesn't fix anything, it might be time to take the car in for a diagnosis.

Just thought I'd report back with the diagnosis.

Transfer case is out. The Volvo tech also suggested replacing a sleeve and some seals because he said they'll be the next to go.

Anyone else have this repair done? The estimate to get all the work done is $2k

it is possible you only need the sleeve. the only way to know is once you pull the angle of the dangle gear out and inspect it. the sleeve teeth will be worn down or missing. The sleeve is much less expensive and could be all it needs.
