2001 S60 T5 Transmission hesitates going from 1st to 2nd and is getting worse. Is there common cause to this that can be easily fixed or does it need to be replaced? Thanks for any help!

There are know issues with 01-02 tranys. Have not seen a T5 posted but my guess that its the same Transmissions. First look at replacing trany fluid.Flush kit from IPD and 12 qts of Volvo JWS 3309/mobil 3309/toyota t-iv ONLY do not let any one tell you that any other fluid can be used.You can also check with Volvo deal for software updates and i believe its a B4servo cover repair can be done.But this may all be for nothing in most cases when the trays starts to skp/slip its to late to do anything but replace.Dealer will use New trany $4500 with labor.Find a local Volvo shop and see if you can have a used one or even a rebuilt one used.GL

 

+ 1 on the ATF Flush kit from IPD. I flushed my 2.5t last year with it and it is an easy job. It took me 13qts of ATF to start seeing a clear red ATF out of the tranny cooling line. I used the toyota T-IV ATF as it is the same as the Volvo ATF but much cheaper, go figure!

No mine did not have any problem when I did the flush but I read on this forum that some others have experienced big improvement in their Volvo's tranny behavior after flushing the ATF. It all depends how bad your transmission already is. I myself have experienced a significant improvement on a Ford pick up truck before and after a flush. Before the flush the transmission was starting to slip a little bit, the reverse would not engage once every 4 or 5 times and the tranny was not smooth. All of that disappeared after the flush was done. What I am saying is that the flush is easy and cheap enough, around $100 all together between ATF (if you get the Toyota one) and IPD flush kit, that it is worth trying before going to a MUCH more expensive solution. The IPD kit comes with instruction how to do the flush. It is an easy job.
How many miles do you have on your s60? Did you check the state of your ATF? is it dark and have a burning smell? Is your level of ATF not too low? This can be easily checked by looking at your ATF dipstick. If the ATF looks dark (it is supposed to have a clear reddish color) and has a burning smell I would definitely try a flush first.
