2004 S60 Throttle issues
We purchased a 2004 S60 with about 93,000 miles. Having some obvious throttle body issues such as rough idle, trouble starting etc. We live in an area where our Volvo dealer just shut down and there is only one Volvo knowledgeable mechanic in the area. He agrees a throttle body issue but no codes will show up and he’s concerned he will replace it and then not have the right codes to program it. I’ve had the car stall twice on busy roads and it’s apparent we need a repair but the closest dealer is 2 hours away. Can we fix this ourselves? Do we need codes to program the new throttle body? Can we find the codes without going two hours away? Basically want to know if we have any options before getting an expensive tow that may not be necessary.
My situation exactly. Dealer is telling me $200 to reprogram once a new Throttle Body is installed. You can't buy a used one, because old codes can't be flushed. Must be new and authentic, so total cash outlay is $1000+. There is no getting around it, it seems, unless you use this service from Xemodex where they rebuilt your throttle body to new spec w/o wiping out the codes, so you get it back and reinstall and that's done! But it is not cheap either $700+install fee.

Hopefully there is a closer auto shop dealing with Volvos who can at least scan the car for you.
The throttle body can be removed and cleaned by a competent DIY'er whose done their homework. If you need a new throttle body, aka ETM, FCPEuro.com sells ones from Bosch. Apparently no programming required??
My car recently had:
Hard starts, stall, rough idle, smoke, turbo scream, limp mode, poor accel, no gear past 3rd, anti skid light, check engine light. Codes for ETM, MAF, ECM, ABS.
I thought it was a shot turbo as I have a bit of oil coming up the charge air pipe at the coupler.. oh no! i was looking at replacing the pcv system but passed the 'glove' test.. I need to clean etm, i cleaned the maf, thought maybe to replace the fuel sensor..but!!!!
Found a disconnected charge air pipe at the connection to the intercooler. Quickly reattached it, cleared my fault codes and has been running smooth since, no issue.
Maybe this gives some ideas..
Cheers.
