I have a 2004 Volvo S60 - This has happened a couple of times now, but when I drive through a puddle it seems to pop into winter mode. Now I think my winter mode is acting up and my car makes a very loud squealing noise. I tried driving in 4th gear because the manual said it would not pop into winter mode from 4th gear, but that didn't work. Any suggestions what it could be?

Look at the tires. In the middle of the treads are little square pieces of rubber that are called wear indicators. If they are flush with the tire its time to change the tires.
