Default 2005 S60 with stuck steering lock

Posting on behalf of a friend at work, who has a 2005 S60. He can turn the key to the first position but can't start it. Apparently he had it looked at and was told there was a mechanism in the steering column that would be $600 to replace. From what I gather, this mechanism has something to do with the steering lock and he can't get it to disengage anymore. I'm going to the junkyard this weekend, hoping to find and pull the right part for him, if I get an answer by then. I haven't personally dealt with steering lock issues, so I don't know anything about the mechanism or how it functions.

A junkyard one won't work so don't waste your time. A new one from the dealer is needed because it is coded to the key. $600 is a bit high though. Should be $275 for the part plus 1.5 hours labor.

That's unfortunate. I suppose he could save money installing the part himself if it isn't terribly difficult?

yes 600 dollars is an accurate number. it isnt the steering column that has failed. it is the steering column lock. you have to get it from the dealer and only the dealer because they have to call and tell volvo to make the column lock. they always say it stakes 2-6 weeks to send it out but you should get it in about a week.

$600 is not accurate unless you overcharge for labor at your dealership.
