I have an '04 S60.
The A/C works fine for about 10-15 minutes, then it just stops cooling and smells as if the compressor is not turned on.
If I turn the car off, or the A/C off for that matter for a couple of minutes and turn it back on it starts cooling again.
It does this everytime. I recharged it about 2 months ago but notice that it does not cool as it used to. I don't believe there are any leaks because when it works it cools fine, albeit not as cold as before.
Before I take it anywhere to get ridiculous opinions/estimates as to why this is happening I would like some input from you all.
I am very mechanical and pretty much do all my mechanical work, but are a little ignorant on the refrigiration department.

you should never need to recharge the R134-a, if you run low there are minor leaks as during the winter when its not used as much the seals tend to dry out and shrink.

although if its fully charged up and its not cooling properly, check your ac compressor clutch, if worn it can start to slip causing the pump to not work as well.

 

There is a good chance that the ac clutch is excessively worn and the electromagnet force isn't strong enough to keep the clutch engaged. I think the clearance for the clutch is .016. There are shims behind the clutch that can be removed to reduce the clearance. Autozone may rent a puller to remove the clutch from the compressor.
