Default Bulb Failure Position Light & Check Stop Lamp

I have gotten an intermittent Bulb Failure Position Light for a few years now. It always went away so I always honored that and ignored it

Now it has a partner in crime named "Check Stop Lamp".

We've checked the manual and circled the car a few times and simply cannt figure out WTF a "Stop Lamp" is. Any help out there?

Also, I was reading how the Position Lights probably need to be replaced and a poster was kind enough to post an (idiot proof) picture (thanks!) It was mentioned that these position light bulbs can be purchased at any auto parts store. How do I figure out which bulbs to purchase to replace my position lights in my 2001 s60?

Thanks

Stop lamps are just the brake light bulbs. Have someone hold the brakes while you see which side is out.

Position lights are in the same assembly as the stop light. There are two small bulbs that make up the position lights and one may be out. They are R5W bulbs available for a couple of dollars at an automotive store or Wallmart. Changing them is a very easy 2 min job.

It was also explained to me by dealer at one point that the computer can detect if these bulbs are about to go bad. He said if the bulb starts to become brownish around, it may still be working properly but will burn out soon. Mine were still working for sure but getting the warning messages.

So it is up to you if you want to wait until that time comes or just go to auto store and get new replacement.

I had the position light fail message and it turned out to be my license plate bulb. Check them as well.

The "Bulb Failure Position Light" message is only triggered by the taillight bulbs, two per side. There is no bulb failure detection for the license plate bulbs.
