My windshield washer on my 2005 s60 stopped working. I had left it parked for 3 weeks and when I started it again the washer wouldn't squirt.

The wipers move and I checked the fuse for the washer (#15) and it is good. There doesn't seem to be fluid leaking on the ground, but the level of the fluid does go down a bit when I squirt it.

So my diagnosis is one of two things:
1. Bad pump
2. A leaking/disconnected hose and the fluid is leaking on to the skid panel and so I don't see it on the ground.

How can I get to the pump to see if it is working and are pump failures common?

If the s60 is anything similar to the V70, you'll have to remove the front bumper to access the pump.

The good news is that the pump is toward the back of the reservoir and accessible, though tight. I have seen the washer nozzles clog, so you might try removing the hose from one wiper and see if any fluid comes out. Also, you should be able to hear the pump motor. The pumps themselves are relatively reliable and there are only about three issues with them: No power to the pump, Pump motor failure, and a stripped pump drive.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to take the front bumper off tomorrow and see what I found. I bought a new pump from advance for $17 which I can take back if I don't need it.

 

OK - I took the front bumper off. Actually pretty easy. You need a torx driver and you need to push the little rivets in in the middle of them to release them. Be careful not to yank the lights to the front fog lamps. The pump came off easily - it is very accessible and the new one went on. The advance auto pump didn't come with the correct volvo plug for the wires but came with a couple of crimp connectors. I've a clean windshield now!
