Default Hard to start up the engine right after refueling

Hello all,

I have a Volvo s60 2001, and recently I have had the following problem and hope that I can find the root cause of this.

Every morning, I have no problem when starting up the engine.
But, whenever I refuel at the gas station, I have hard time starting up the engine. Once the engine starts, then I won't have the same problem until the next refill.

Does this something to do with my Fuel Pump?
Or fuel filter?
Or any other issues?

Thank you all!

I think it is a problem in the evap system. But not sure exactly I have heard alot of complaints but none have come into the shop about it yet.

I stopped by my local mechanic shop that I have known for last 10 years.
He did take a look at the engine and unscrewed some kind of little black cap on top of the engine. The gas went out from there, and he said that the fuel pump sees to be ok. - I didn't have any idea of what he did check by doing it.

He ran his little tiny device to get any computer error code from my car, and he said that he couldn't get any detailed info about the error but it had something to do with my EVAV system. He recommended the replacement of EVAV system. Is this the real problem of my car?

I have an appointment with Volvo tomorrow morning to check if my fuel pump needs to be replaced - because I got a letter from Volvo stating my fuel pump will be replaced with no charge if fuel pump is not good (Notification of extended warranty on fuel pump until I hit 150,000 miles).

Should I mention this problem to Volvo tomorrow as well?
Or, can I just remain quiet and wait for Volvo's diagnosis result? No cost to me anyway :-)

Anyone had the similar problem in your Volvo?

Thank you!

In fact, my mechanic got some computer error code - something like Evap problem. But, he couldn't give me more details because his device couldn't give him detailed info either.

This morning, I took my car to Volvo to check if I am eligible for Fuel Pump replacement - I got a letter from Volvo for this issue.
Instead, they found that I have some problem with Evap Valve. He gave me the exact part number too.

I didn't let him fix this because Volvo gave me the price quote of $190 (labor) + $42 part, instead I just bought the genuine Volvo part from part shop.
And then, I took my car to my local mechanic shop who has known my car very well for last few years.

He took out the Evap Value (looks like little switch) #1 from the top of radiator and checked it if it was ok. It was totally bad and gone!!!!!!

So, he replaced it with the part I bought from the dealer part shop and also he did oil change with synthetic oil.
I paid him $100 for all of this, and I am feeling very relieved..... By the way, I have to replace the fuel tank cap as well with a new genuine part.
I replaced it with the one from AutoZone few weeks ago, and this might have caused some problem as well according to my mechanic.

We will see if I have the same problem next time when I refuel the gas tank.

I will keep you posted.

My Volvo S60 (2001) has 120,000k milages but it runs very well so far.
I love this car!!!!!!

Dear all,

My problem has been resolved!!!!!!
It was due to the death of evap valve. According to Volvo mechanic shop, one of my evap valve had gone dead and he gave me the exact part number.

I bought it from Volvo part shop and took it with me to my local mechanic shop.
It looked like a small T-shaped electrical switch, but it was totally dead and bad.

I got it replaced on Friday afternoon along with a new Volvo genuine fuel tank cap.
This evening, I refueled my gas tank and guess what... I was able to start the engine with NO problems at all.

So far, it looks like the root cause of this issue was "evap valve #1."

But I will wait for the next refuel until I declare this has been finally fixed.

I will keep you posted with some updates later!

I refueled again yesterday morning, and the problem has gone.... no more "CHECK ENGINE" light either.

I still have the invoice and diagnosis work paper in my car, so I can send you the part number later today. But, please keep in mind that there are three(?) evap valve in Volvo s60 (as long as I heard from them) and they are not the same types.

I hope that it helps....

Hey risknet, thanks for all your help. Turns out it was the same thing...also needed a new charcoal canister...not sure if that has anything to do with the problem though. Nicolas
