Default power steering fluid

I have a 03 s60 turbo and my power steering a bit low. i looked in the owners manual and it says to add ATF fliud.now i thought that ATF stands for automatic transmission fliud. If thats correct than can you get the p.s fuild at any autozone, napa and advanced auto parts?

Yes, ATF is automatic transmission fluid. A Dex. III compatible fluid should work. I use the Mobil 1 ATF in my Toyota PS with good results.

Dont use ATF for power steering fluid.
The newer cars take a special fluid.
Vavoline makes one that is compatible.

Get this one.
The ATF will mess the system up.

The newer fluid will be a light green. I think the ATF should be red. You should be able to tell what was initially in there. If the fluid is light green, then it takesCHF-11S fluid. FCP Groton has a good price on it.

Volvo switched from ATF to the CHF-11S in 2005 for the S60.

Acutally Volvo switched to that fluid in all 1999 cars.
The S60 got it when they started on 2001.

Hi Tech,

Looks like Valvoline has discontinued the SynPower Power Steering fluid which I have used in my 2001 S60. I cannot find it in their web site nor local stores. Is there any other compatible PS fluid you would recommend?

thanks

Mingster

Do you know why Valvoline discontinued the product? Please let me know once you find out the new compatible fluid. Can I just mix it with the old valvoline fluid?

thanks

Not sure why they discontinued it.
Wynns is what we are using now but a quick search online doesn't give much.
I will try to get a Number off the bottle on monday.
Was REALLY busy at work today.

Default But there it is, right in the damn owners manual

My owner's manual, which bears the VIN number of my car, a 2004 S60 AWD with 2.5T, under the fluids list only "ATF".

I went to the local dealership and a factory trained service tech of 12 years said "Oh, no, we never put ATF in those cars, we use the Volvo stuff (Pentosin).

I bought my car with a known PS rack leak. I would imagine Pentosin would REALLY leak, (and at 30.00 a quart) After i replace the rack (and probably pump and reservoir), what do I use? Could the wrong fluid have taken out the rack?

This will be my seventh Volvo. It's just stuff like this that makes me hate Volvo.
