#1 make sure the timing belt has been done at least once.
#2 see if you can get the maintenance history (and a carfax)
#3 check all fluids for color/level - oil, trans, power steering, coolant, brakes. Consider flushing em all...
#4 look for leaks/weeping seals around the engine
#5 look for torn CV boots, leaky struts, brake pads/ ebrake function
